On 15 July 1986 62-5896 was piloted by Capt. Scott H. Paul, USMC and co-piloted by Lt.
Cmdr. Yandel, USN both were assigned to Test Pilot School (TPS) at Pax River.
Paul & Yandel were performing touch and goes at the Naval Air Station at Norfolk, Va.
when they experienced an engine failure and the aircraft flew inverted into the ground.
Due to their lack of altitude they were unable to eject and both perished in the
crash.
The subsequent investigation found no pilot error and determined that the cause of the
crash was a mechanical defect in one of the engines.
Capt. Paul was survived by a wife and two children.
As evidenced by his selection to TPS he was an extraordinary pilot.
